Steggles Quality Chickens

Steggles Quality Chickens

As Australia's largest Chicken meat producer we pride ourselves in having advanced farming and breeding programs, high standards of animal welfare and processing technology which is at least on par with world standards.

Most people would be surprised at the level of science and care that is involved in raising chickens.

Here are some key facts about our chicken production that may also dispel a few myths about how chickens are raised in Australia:

Chicken Feed

Our Chickens are fed diets which have been specially formulated by our nutritionists to ensure that our chickens receive the right amounts of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. This promotes good physical health for the chickens and ensures we produce nutritious and tasty meat for your plate.

Our chicken feed is mostly made up of grains (including wheat, sorghum, barley), and protein meals like soybean meal, legumes, canola and other oilseeds.

Whilst it is still a very widely believed myth in Australia, hormones are not added to chicken feed or in any way administered to chickens. It is illegal to use hormones in chicken production in Australia, and has been for over 40 years.

At Steggles, we grow Cobb and Ross breeds, which are the optimum breeds for producing our quality chicken. This encompasses the selection of the strongest, healthiest and best meat-producing chickens to breed. A broiler is a chicken raised to produce meat, rather than eggs.  Our chickens are not genetically modified.

Once those chickens selected for breeding lay the eggs, they are collected and taken for incubation in the hatchery, where the fertile egg takes 21 days for a chick to hatch. Whilst the chick is growing inside the shell, we keep the eggs warm until the chicks are ready to hatch in our special state-of-the-art incubation facilities.  These facilities ensure the developing chickens get the level of warmth they need. Once hatched, the chickens are sent to a farm.

Animal Welfare

At Steggles, we have a strong commitment to animal welfare and farming healthy, high quality chickens. Our chickens are not raised in cages - they are raised in custom built large chicken barns where they have easy access to food and water.

We have an Animal Welfare Policy which we use to educate our staff and audits are conducted regularly to ensure that day-to-day working procedures are carried out in accordance with the Policy. This ensures that the animals are treated and reared with care.

All Steggles chickens are raised in large barns, and free of any added hormones.
