Turkey comes up trumps in nutritional report
Turkey identified as important protein to aid a healthy lifestyle for the whole family
Turkey is set to become the new protein found in Australian households. A recent nutritional report by Food & Nutrition Australia, commissioned by Steggles, has identified a wide range of nutritional benefits of turkey.
Turkey mince was found to be lower in kilojoules, total fat, and saturated fatty acids than other mince products compared in the report. Products analysed included lamb mince, extra lean beef mince and lean veal mince. The report identified the nutrients found in turkey are central to an ongoing healthy diet and lifestyle.Â Being high in protein, turkey is a valuable food to include in the diets of all Australians with a 100g serving providing more than a third of an adults daily protein requirements (more for children).
Turkey hindquarter was also identified as a good source of zinc, while all cuts of turkey were found to be high in vitamin B12, with turkey mince providing up to 135% of an average adults daily needs in one 100g serving. Turkey is also a source of selenium and is one of the richest sources of niacin compared to other commonly eaten meats. Niacin is a B vitamin required daily for the release of energy from foods as well as many other nutrients.
Sharon Natoli, Accredited Practising Dietitian from Food & Nutrition Australia said, "Turkey is a protein-rich food that contributes important nutrients as part of a healthy and balanced diet. It's quick and easy to cook and provides another option when it comes to preparing healthy everyday meals.
"With a variety of turkey cuts now available on the market, Australians can start experimenting with the inclusion of turkey in their meal plans at home. It's as easy as chicken to cook, is versatile and can be used in everyday dishes for example, turkey meat balls, grilled turkey breast or turkey hindquarter roast."

The Health and Nutritional Benefits of turkey report also identified the following:
Turkey is high in vitamin B12, which is needed for growth and development, a healthy nervous system and normal blood formation. Some cuts of turkey provide more than 100% of the recommended daily intake of this important vitamin.
Turkey is a source of selenium, a mineral needed to protect cells in the body from damage. Selenium also works with vitamin E as part of a key antioxidant enzyme and helps to protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. All cuts of turkey provide between 16-24 per cent of the recommended daily intake of selenium.
Various turkey cuts can help increase the intake of certain minerals across the different age groups:
Children: Turkey hindquarter nutritional value matches up with the requirements for young children aged four to eight as it has high levels of zinc and iron, as well as omega-3 and, ALA which is often low in children's diets. A 100g serve of turkey hindquarter provides 90% of a child's recommended daily intake of zinc and 12% of iron.
Teens: Some of the key nutrient deficiencies typically found in adolescents' diets include magnesium, zinc, iron and phosphorus, as well as calcium, folate, vitamin A, iodine and vitamins D and E. Cuts of turkey including skinless hindquarter, turkey breast and turkey mince contain a host of nutrients including phosphorus, zinc, vitamin B6 and niacin.
Pregnancy: Nutrient requirements increase during pregnancy for a broad range of nutrients including protein, selenium, zinc, vitamin B6, niacin and pantothenic acid. A 100g serve of turkey provides the additional protein, vitamin B6 and selenium needed by pregnant women, and a 100g serve of turkey breast provides additional zinc.
Older Adults: Many older adults require more nutrients as they get older however, they do not commonly eat the minimum number of serves from the core food groups and increasingly find themselves in poor health due to a number of nutrient deficiencies. Fibre, calcium, vitamins A, E, B6, B12, folate, vitamin C, magnesium and zinc are commonly low in the diet of older adults. Various cuts of turkey will provide different amounts of important nutrients a 100g serving of turkey mince provides 100% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin B12 and turkey hindquarter is the highest in iron and zinc.
